As enjoyable as traveling abroad is, many of us don’t do it as often as we’d like because of the expense. After all, airline tickets aren’t getting any cheaper. Neither are any of the other expenses involved in an international trip.
But what if you could fly to an international destination for free? If you’re thinking of visiting Hong Kong this year, it might be possible.
In an effort to relaunch tourism in the region, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is offering 500,000 free tickets to the city on various airlines through its Hello Hong Kong program.
How Do You Enter?
You can enter to win on the program’s website. If selected, you’ll receive a free round-trip economy ticket to Hong Kong, as well as a pack of vouchers for local restaurants, bars, and hotels worth about $100.
The first two rounds of free tickets were available to residents of mainland China and Southeast Asia, and winners have already been announced. The next round is scheduled to start on May 1, and winners can be from anywhere in the world.
What’s the Catch?
Even if you win, this isn’t an all-inclusive trip. You’ll still be responsible for paying for your own hotels, meals, ground transportation and other activities, minus what’s covered by the $100 in vouchers. You’ll also be responsible for paying any taxes and fees associated with the tickets. It won’t make your trip free by any means, but it could certainly save you some money.
Are There Any Other Programs Like This?
Yes. Other destinations are trying to sweeten the pot by offering incentives to increase tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, Taiwan is offering up to 500,000 tourists the equivalent of $165 in cash to visit.
Also, if you visit the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy, you can get a free train ticket and complimentary entry to museums and public transportation.
Save Even More with Travel Insurance
While we wish you luck in winning a free flight or some cash for your vacation, don’t forget to buy proper insurance coverage for your travels abroad.
One of the quickest ways to blow your vacation budget is to get sick or hurt in another country. If you need medical treatment and you don’t have travel medical insurance, the bill you receive could come as a major shock. Since we can’t predict getting the flu or breaking a bone abroad, the next best thing is to be prepared. Buy travel medical insurance, so you can get the care you need for a price that won’t surprise you.
If you need to cancel your trip, it can be more than disappointing; it can be very expensive. Many of your prepaid travel expenses like airline tickets (assuming they aren’t free) and hotel rooms are not refundable. If you have to cancel your trip, you could end up being forced to pay for it anyway. Travel insurance can save you from this. If you must cancel your trip for a covered reason, your travel insurance plan’s trip cancellation coverage can see to it that you’re reimbursed for eligible prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.
